4.8

BJT 784"Your celestial mango grove is lovely; here stands a vast mansion, resounding with many kinds of musical instruments, reverberating with the company of celestial nymphs.

BJT 785And here, a great golden lamp burns perpetually, surrounded on all sides by trees whose fruits are bolts of cloth.

BJT 786By what did you obtain this complexion of yours? By what was all this accomplished for you here? And by what do pleasurable enjoyments arise for you?

BJT 787O goddess of great majesty, I ask you: 'When you were a human being, what meritorious deed did you perform? By what do you have such majesty, blazing brilliantly like this, and your complexion illuminating all the directions?'"

BJT 788That goddess, delighted at being questioned by the venerable Moggallāna, answered the question and explained what karma had brought about this result:

BJT 789"I, when I was a human being in the world of humans, in a former life in the human world, had a dwelling built for the Sangha, surrounded by mango trees.

BJT 790When the dwelling was completed and finished, during the celebration held for that occasion, I fashioned fruits made from bolts of cloth and draped the mango trees with those artificial fruits.

BJT 791There, I caused a lamp to be lit and offered food to the supreme assembly. With a clear and faithful heart, I personally transferred that dwelling to the Sangha.

BJT 792By that deed, I obtained this lovely mango grove; here stands a vast mansion, resounding with many kinds of musical instruments, reverberating with the company of celestial nymphs.

BJT 793And here, a great golden lamp burns perpetually, surrounded on all sides by trees whose fruits are bolts of cloth.

BJT 794By that deed I obtained this complexion. By that deed all this was accomplished for me here. And by that deed pleasurable enjoyments arise for me.

BJT 795Venerable bhikkhu of great majesty, I have told you of the meritorious deed I performed when I was a human being. By that deed I have such majesty, blazing brilliantly like this, and my complexion illuminates all the directions."
