– A. THE FEMALE DEVAS

– THE CITTALATĀ CHAPTER

2.9

BJT 257"O divine lady, you stand with a radiant complexion, causing all the directions to blaze forth, like the star Osadhī.

BJT 258By reason of what have you obtained such a complexion as this? By reason of what has success come to you here? And by reason of what do pleasurable enjoyments arise for you?

BJT 259O divine lady of great might, I ask you: 'When you were a human being, what meritorious deed did you perform? By reason of what do you possess such blazing might, and your complexion illuminates all the directions?'"

BJT 260That divine lady, rejoicing when questioned by the Venerable Moggallāna, being asked the question, explained of which kamma this result was:

BJT 261"I was known as 'Sunandā,' a female lay disciple in the city of Rājagaha, endowed with faith and virtuous conduct, always delighting in sharing.

BJT 262I gave robes, food, lodgings, and lamps with a pure mind to those who were upright persons.

BJT 263On the fourteenth day, the fifteenth day, the eighth day of each fortnight, and on the special days of the fortnight, there was the proper undertaking of the eight factors (the eight precepts).

BJT 264I observed the Uposatha day, ever restrained in the precepts. I dwelt in a mansion with self-restraint and with sharing.

BJT 265I refrained from the taking of life, and was restrained regarding false speech, stealing, misconduct, and I abstained from drinking intoxicants.

BJT 266I delighted in the five rules of training, was one who understood the Noble Truths, a female lay disciple of the renowned Gotama of the Vision, who possesses fame.

BJT 267By reason of this, I obtained such a complexion as this. By reason of this, success has come to me here. And by reason of this, pleasurable enjoyments arise for me.

BJT 268Venerable bhikkhu of great might, I have declared to you the meritorious deed I performed when I was a human being. By reason of this I possess such blazing might, and my complexion illuminates all the directions."
