BJT 245"O goddess, you stand with a radiant complexion, causing all the quarters to blaze brilliantly, like the star Osadhī.
BJT 246Through what have you come to possess such a complexion as this? Through what has this been accomplished for you here? And through what do pleasing enjoyments arise for you?
BJT 247O goddess of great might, I ask you: 'When you were a human being, what meritorious deed did you perform? Through what do you possess such might, blazing with radiance like this, and your complexion illuminating all the quarters?'"
BJT 248That goddess, delighted when questioned by the venerable Moggallāna, being asked the question, explained which kamma produced this fruit:
BJT 249"I was known among people as 'Saddhā,' a female lay disciple in the city of Rājagaha, endowed with faith and virtuous conduct, always delighting in generosity.
BJT 250I gave robes, food, resting places, and lamps, with a pure mind, to people of upright character.
BJT 251On the fourteenth day, the fifteenth day, the eighth day of each fortnight, and on the special days of the fortnight, there was the proper observance of the eight factors — the Uposatha with its eight precepts.
BJT 252I practiced the Uposatha day, always restrained in the precepts. I dwelt in a palatial mansion, with self-restraint and generosity.
BJT 253I abstained from the taking of life, and was restrained with regard to false speech, theft, misconduct, and I kept far away from the drinking of intoxicants.
BJT 254I rejoiced in the five training rules; I was one who understood the Noble Truths; I was a female lay disciple of the renowned Gotama of the Eye.
BJT 255Through this I have come to possess such a complexion as this. Through this has this been accomplished for me here. And through this do pleasing enjoyments arise for me.
BJT 256Venerable monk of great might, I declare to you the meritorious deed I performed when I was a human being. Through this I possess such might, blazing with radiance like this, and my complexion illuminates all the quarters."
