– II . The Chapter on Powers

5.18. Happiness for Whom? (2)

—Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu brings happiness to others but not to himself. What five?

Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not himself accomplished in virtue but encourages others to be accomplished in virtue; he is not himself accomplished in meditation… he is not himself accomplished in wisdom… he is not himself accomplished in liberation… he is not himself accomplished in the knowledge and vision of liberation but encourages others to be accomplished in the knowledge and vision of liberation. Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu brings happiness to others but not to himself.

This collection was translated by Venerable Thích Minh Châu from the Pali Canon into Vietnamese in 1976–1977, and published by Vạn Hạnh Buddhist Institute, Sài Gòn, in 1980–1981 . As part of the translation and publication program for the Vietnamese Buddhist Canon, the collection was revised into 4 volumes and reissued in 1996 as numbers 21, 22, 23, and 24.

📜Why does this text contain “…”?

The “…” is an abbreviation carried over from the Pāli original itself, called peyyāla. The early canon was memorized and recited, so passages repeated verbatim from a preceding discourse were commonly contracted to an elision mark rather than written out in full. Venerable Thích Minh Châu's translation preserves this convention. Some texts therefore look short — but that is the canonical form, not missing content or a truncated translation. The elided passages can be read in full in the preceding discourses of the same chapter.
