4.227.. Kinds of Expression (1st)

… Not having seen, they say they have seen; not having heard, they say they have heard; not having sensed, they say they have sensed; not having cognized, they say they have cognized. Not having seen, they say they have not seen…; not having heard, they say they have not heard…; not having sensed, they say they have not sensed…; not having cognized, they say they have not cognized.

This discourse collection was translated from Pali into Vietnamese by Venerable Thích Minh Châu in 1976–1977 and published by Vạn Hạnh Buddhist Institute, Saigon, in 1980–1981. As part of the Vietnamese Buddhist Canon translation and publication program, the collection was revised into 4 volumes and reprinted in 1996 as volumes 21, 22, 23, and 24.

📜Why does this text contain “…”?

The “…” is an abbreviation carried over from the Pāli original itself, called peyyāla. The early canon was memorized and recited, so passages repeated verbatim from a preceding discourse were commonly contracted to an elision mark rather than written out in full. Venerable Thích Minh Châu's translation preserves this convention. Some texts therefore look short — but that is the canonical form, not missing content or a truncated translation. The elided passages can be read in full in the preceding discourses of the same chapter.
