Numbered Discourses 1 Chapter Seven

“The foremost of my laywomen in first going for refuge is Sujātā the general’s daughter. … as a donor is Visākhā, Migāra’s mother. … who are very learned is Khujjuttarā. … who dwell in love is Sāmāvatī. … who practice absorption is Uttarā, Nanda’s mother. … who give fine things is Suppavāsā the Koliyan. … who care for the sick is the laywoman Suppiyā. … who have experiential confidence is Kātiyānī. … who are intimate is the householder Nakula’s mother. … whose confidence is based on oral transmission is the laywoman Kāḷī of Kuraraghara.”

📜Why does this text contain “…”?

The “…” is an abbreviation carried over from the Pāli original itself, called peyyāla. The early canon was memorized and recited, so passages repeated verbatim from a preceding discourse were commonly contracted to an elision mark rather than written out in full. Venerable Thích Minh Châu's translation preserves this convention. Some texts therefore look short — but that is the canonical form, not missing content or a truncated translation. The elided passages can be read in full in the preceding discourses of the same chapter.
