Numbered Discourses 1 Chapter Two

“The foremost of my monk disciples in creating a mind-made body is Cūḷapanthaka. … who are skilled in the evolution of consciousness is Cūḷapanthaka. … who are skilled in the evolution of perception is Mahāpanthaka. … who live without strife is Subhūti. … who are worthy of a religious donation is Subhūti. … who stay in the wilderness is Revata of the Acacia Wood. … who practice absorption is Revata the Doubter. … who are energetic is Soṇa Koḷivisa. … who enunciate well is Soṇa of the Sharp Ears. … who receive many possessions is Sīvali. … who are committed to faith is Vakkalī.”

📜Why does this text contain “…”?

The “…” is an abbreviation carried over from the Pāli original itself, called peyyāla. The early canon was memorized and recited, so passages repeated verbatim from a preceding discourse were commonly contracted to an elision mark rather than written out in full. Venerable Thích Minh Châu's translation preserves this convention. Some texts therefore look short — but that is the canonical form, not missing content or a truncated translation. The elided passages can be read in full in the preceding discourses of the same chapter.
