EXPOSITION OF THE CANDRAGARBHA SŪTRA

Background

The Candragarbha Sūtra is a scripture belonging to the Mahāsaṃnipāta collection, in the Northern Mahāyāna Canon tradition. The original title "Candragarbha" means "Moon Treasury," symbolizing the clarity, coolness, and illuminating function of the Dharma amid the darkness of ignorance.

This scripture is regarded as an ultimate prophecy of the Buddha Śākyamuni concerning the future of the True Dharma. It reflects the traditional Mahāyāna Buddhist conception of the cycle of the Dharma's decline (Pāli: Saddharmavipralopa, Chinese: 正法衰退) - from the period of the True Dharma, through the Semblance Dharma, to the M末法 (Mật Pháp), when the True Dharma gradually disappears from the world. This sūtra is not meant to make practitioners despair, but to awaken them to the importance of protecting and upholding the Dharma in difficult times.

In particular, this scripture is regarded as being intended for those who believe in the Dharma of the Bodhisattva Path (Bodhisattva Yāna) - those who relinquish personal nirvana in order to liberate sentient beings.

For modern practice, the Candragarbha Sūtra bears three important messages.
