THUS HAVE I HEARD:

At one time, the Buddha was on Vulture Peak Mountain near the great city of Rajagriha, together with 100,000 great bhikshus and 77,000 great bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas such as Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, Manjushri Bodhisattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva, and others like them were the foremost among them. They had all attained right samadhi and dharani, and abided in the inconceivable realm of liberation.

At that time, the great bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, seated in the midst of the great assembly, rose from his seat, went to where the World-Honored One was, joined his palms toward the Buddha, respectfully bowed, gazed upon the Honored One's countenance, and said:

"World-Honored One! I wish, within this Dharma assembly, to proclaim the Universal Wisdom Treasury of the bodhisattvas, which is the heart of the Perfection of Wisdom. I respectfully ask the World-Honored One to permit me to speak the secret and essential Dharma of the bodhisattvas."

Then the World-Honored One, with a subtle and wondrous Brahma voice, told the great bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara:

"Excellent, excellent, one endowed with great compassion! Speak, and make a vast dome of light for all sentient beings."

Knowing that the Buddha had granted permission and mindful protection, the great bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara entered the samadhi of Wisdom Light. Having entered this samadhi, and by the power of right samadhi, he cultivated the profound Perfection of Wisdom and illuminated that the self-nature of the five skandhas is all empty.

Having clearly understood that the self-nature of the five skandhas is all empty, he arose peacefully from samadhi and said to the Venerable Shariputra:

"Good man! The bodhisattva has the heart of the Perfection of Wisdom, named the Universal Wisdom Treasury. Now listen and reflect well. I shall distinguish and explain it for you."

When he had spoken these words, the Venerable Shariputra said to the great bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara:

"Yes, pure and vast one! I respectfully ask you to speak. Now is the time.

Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva then said to Shariputra:

"All great bodhisattvas should learn in this way:

The nature of form is emptiness; the nature of emptiness is form. Form is not different from emptiness; emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness; emptiness itself is form. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are also like this.

The nature of consciousness is emptiness; the nature of emptiness is consciousness. Consciousness is not different from emptiness; emptiness is not different from consciousness. Consciousness itself is emptiness; emptiness itself is consciousness.

Shariputra! All dharmas are marked by emptiness: they neither arise nor cease, are neither pure nor defiled, neither increase nor decrease. Therefore, in emptiness there is no form, no feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind; no form, sound, scent, taste, touch, or dharmas; no eye-consciousness, up to no mind-consciousness; no ignorance, and also no ending of ignorance, up to no old age and death, and also no ending of old age and death. There is no suffering, origination, cessation, or path; no wisdom and also no attainment.

Because there is no place of attainment, the bodhisattva relies on the Perfection of Wisdom and attains a mind without obstruction. Because there is no obstruction, there is no fear; he leaves far behind inverted dreamlike thoughts and reaches Ultimate Still Extinction.

All Buddhas of the three times rely on the Perfection of Wisdom, and therefore attain unsurpassed, right, and perfect enlightenment. One should know that the Perfection of Wisdom is the great spiritual mantra, the great bright mantra, the unsurpassed mantra, the unequaled mantra. It can eliminate all suffering, and is true, not false.

Therefore the Heart Mantra of the Perfection of Wisdom has been proclaimed."

The mantra is spoken thus:

|| yết đế, yết đế, ba ra yết đế, ba ra tăng yết đế, bồ đề, tát bà ha. ||

|| gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā ||

When the Buddha had finished speaking this Sutra, the bhikshus together with the bodhisattvas, all the devas, humans, asuras, and gandharvas in the world, having heard the Buddha's teaching, all gave rise to great joy, faithfully accepted it, and reverently practiced it.
