When the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara was practicing the profound Prajñāpāramitā, he illumined and saw that the five aggregates are all empty, and he crossed beyond all suffering and affliction.
"Śāriputra! Because form is emptiness, it has no characteristic of harming. Because feeling is emptiness, it has no characteristic of receiving. Because perception is emptiness, it has no characteristic of cognizing. Because formations are emptiness, they have no characteristic of acting. Because consciousness is emptiness, it has no characteristic of being aware.
Why is this so, Śāriputra? Because form is not different from emptiness; emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness; emptiness itself is form. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are likewise the same.
Śāriputra! All dharmas are marked with emptiness: neither arising nor ceasing, neither pure nor defiled, neither increasing nor decreasing. This emptiness is not of the past, not of the future, and not of the present. Therefore, within emptiness: there is no form, no feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind; no form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharmas; no realm of the eye-consciousness, up to no realm of the mind-consciousness; no ignorance, and also no ending of ignorance, up to no old age and death, and also no ending of old age and death. There is no suffering, origination, cessation, or path; there is no wisdom and also no attainment.
Because there is nothing to be attained, the Bodhisattva relies upon the Prajñāpāramitā, and his mind is without hindrance. Because it is without hindrance, there is no fear; he is freed from all inverted views and dream-like delusions and from all suffering and affliction, and he attains Ultimate Nirvāṇa.
The Buddhas of the three times all rely upon the Prajñāpāramitā, and thus they attain Anuttarā Samyaksaṃbodhi. Know therefore that the Prajñāpāramitā is the great divine mantra, the great radiant mantra, the unsurpassed mantra, the mantra that is unequalled. It can extinguish all suffering, true and not false.
Therefore the Prajñāpāramitā Heart Mantra is now proclaimed."
The mantra is spoken thus:
|| yết đế, yết đế, ba ra yết đế, ba ra tăng yết đế, bồ đề, tát bà ha. ||
|| gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā ||
