大通方廣懺悔滅罪莊嚴成佛經
Chinese title:大通方廣懺悔滅罪莊嚴成佛經
UPPER FASCICLE
Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the city of Rajagriha, together with thirty-six thousand bodhisattvas. They were all destined to attain Buddhahood after one more birth, sovereign in awe-inspiring virtue, and able to expound clearly the Tathagata’s skillful means. Secretly performing the work of the Buddhas, they had all perfected the treasury of awe-inspiring virtue established by the Buddhas.
They upheld the Great Vehicle and preached the Dharma like rolling thunder and the roar of a lion. Their fragrant renown pervaded the ten directions; their virtue was lofty as Mount Sumeru, and their wisdom profound as the great ocean. They subdued the hosts of maras, pacified adherents of non-Buddhist paths, and caused them to become pure.
They possessed all powers, unobstructed liberation, and unwavering abiding; mindfulness, concentration, dharanis, and joyful eloquence; the four immeasurable minds, the six paramitas, immeasurable skillful means, and the meanings of all Dharmas—all were fully perfected. In accordance with sentient beings, they turned the irreversible wheel. They knew existence and nonexistence and skillfully understood the characteristics of all Dharmas.
They manifested within the three realms, saw with the five eyes, and knew the faculties of sentient beings. Their immeasurable awe-inspiring virtue encompassed the entire assembly. They cultivated their minds through meditative concentration and wisdom.
Their bodies were adorned with excellent marks, foremost among all forms. Their minds were like empty space, having relinquished every attachment to beautiful forms. Dwelling in the world, they thoroughly comprehended the nature of all Dharmas.
Their wisdom was unobstructed, and they skillfully knew the various destinies through which sentient beings passed. They possessed every samadhi and drew near to the unequaled, peerless state. Having long planted roots of goodness, they had attained the Buddha’s sovereign wisdom.
They fully possessed the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, and the eighteen unique qualities. They thoroughly understood all wholesome realms and closed every gateway to the evil destinies. They regarded all sentient beings equally, as an only child.
Manifesting bodies of birth throughout the five destinies, they sought to liberate sentient beings and served as great kings of physicians. Amid birth and death, they skillfully diagnosed the illnesses of beings and prescribed medicine according to each illness, causing them to take it and practice accordingly, so that they might forever leave birth and death behind. Whoever heard and understood their teaching attained liberation.
Thus were they endowed with immeasurable merits. In past ages they had made offerings to immeasurable Buddhas, clearly perceived Buddha-nature as the Tathagatas did, and constantly taught that all sentient beings possess Buddha-nature.
Their names were: Bodhisattva Manjusri, Bodhisattva Dipankara, Bodhisattva Nagarjuna, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta, Bodhisattva Medicine King, Bodhisattva Superior Medicine, Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, Bodhisattva Dharma-Sovereign, Bodhisattva Lion’s Roar, Bodhisattva Dharani, Bodhisattva Treasury of Jewels, Bodhisattva Constant Vigor, Bodhisattva Never Resting, Bodhisattva Sign of Faith, Bodhisattva Unexcelled, and Bodhisattva Maitreya. Such were the thirty-six thousand bodhisattva mahasattvas.
There were also eight hundred thousand kotis of mighty heavenly beings, as well as bhiksus, bhiksunis, upasakas, upasikas, devas, nagas, yaksas, humans, nonhumans, and others. Sakra Devendra, together with immeasurable beings of the heavenly realms, stood in the sky and sent down a rain of precious celestial flowers, while immeasurable kinds of music sounded spontaneously. The devas of Brahma, Mara, and Tam-bat burned wondrous incense as an offering to the Tathagata.
Its fragrant smoke spread throughout immeasurable worlds in the ten directions. They vowed together to make offerings universally to all Buddhas throughout the ten directions, to all Dharmas throughout the ten directions, and to all great bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions. For the sake of such benefit, these devas made offerings to the Buddhas and sought the unsurpassed path of the Great Vehicle.
At that time, the Blessed One, surrounded before and behind by an immeasurable, boundless assembly, proceeded toward the Sala Grove. At midday on the fifteenth day of the second month, when he was about to enter nirvana, the Buddha employed his spiritual power and enveloped all beings in his great compassion, guiding them to liberation. He emitted a great sound that reverberated throughout the ten directions and, speaking in the language of every kind of being, proclaimed to sentient beings: “Today the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has compassion for sentient beings, protects sentient beings, gathers in sentient beings, and regards them equally as an only child.
For those without refuge, I shall be their refuge. Those who have not yet seen Buddha-nature, I shall cause to see Buddha-nature. Those who have not yet ended their afflictions, I shall cause to end their afflictions.
Those who have not attained peace and security, I shall cause to attain peace and security. Those who have not yet attained liberation, I shall cause to attain liberation. Those who have not yet attained happiness, I shall cause to attain happiness.
Those who have not yet relinquished doubt, I shall cause to relinquish doubt. Those who have not yet repented shall be enabled to repent. Those who have not yet attained nirvana, I shall cause to attain nirvana.”
At that time, the place of enlightenment was pure, level, and upright, an auspicious and blessed ground measuring ten thousand yojanas in length and breadth. Seeing that the place of enlightenment was level, upright, and pure, the Buddha stopped to rest and said to the bhiksus: “May the Dharma be preached in this place?”
Then the bhiksu Ananda addressed the Buddha: “O Blessed One! Formerly, the Tathagata was naturally fond of forests and mountains, flowing waters and clear springs, and gardens filled with flowers and fruit. Here there are no flowing springs, clear waters, gardens, kingdoms, people, or villages. Today, as the Tathagata abides here to preach the Dharma, multitudes of people will come from distant places. They will be exhausted, hungry, and deprived, and their lives will not be secure. With food there is life; with life there is a body; with a body there is the path. Without food there is no life; without life there is no body; without a body there is no path. Since there are such unsuitable conditions here, how can the Blessed One preach the Dharma in this place?”
At that time, the greatly wise Sariputra, through the power of the Buddha’s wisdom, said to Ananda:
“Place the Dharma foremost and entertain no other consideration. The Tathagata, the Blessed One, possesses not only the ten powers and the fearlessnesses; the Tathagata, the Blessed One, also possesses immeasurable powers, universal fearlessness, immeasurable wisdom, and immeasurable spiritual might. For those who have no refuge, he becomes their refuge.
Those who have not yet seen Buddha-nature, he causes to see Buddha-nature. Those who have not yet become free from afflictions, he causes to leave afflictions behind. Those who have not yet attained peace and security, he causes to attain peace and security.
Those who have not yet attained liberation, he causes to attain liberation. Those who have not yet attained happiness, he causes to attain happiness. Those who have not yet attained nirvana, he causes to attain nirvana.
Since the Tathagata, the Blessed One, possesses such immeasurable spiritual powers, why worry that the Tathagata cannot cause everything to arise spontaneously? I remember that long ago, when the great being Vimalakirti, bodhisattvas from other regions, sravakas, pratyekabuddhas, mighty heavenly beings, naga spirits, and a great assembly had gathered in a house, no food was to be seen. At that time I thought, ‘What will this great assembly now have to eat?’ The great being Vimalakirti immediately said to me, ‘The wisdom of a sravaka is narrow.
Be mindful of the true Dharma! Why do you instead think first of clothing and food, life, beds, and seats?’ When the great being Vimalakirti spoke these words, devas and humans attained the path, while I was filled with shame. The thought in your mind today is just the same!”
At that time, the Tathagata said to Ananda: “It is indeed just as Sariputra has said! You should be mindful of the Great Vehicle and not think about bodily comfort!” Having spoken, he entered samadhi. Through the power of his awe-inspiring spiritual might, a golden flower arose from the earth.
The flower was four hundred thousand yojanas high and covered the entire great trichiliocosm. A net of vaidurya spread above the flower. Beneath it were many precious bathing pools, equal in extent to the flower and known as the Eight Meritorious Qualities.
They were filled with fragrant water. Along the four banks of the pools were innumerable precious flowers, such as utpala flowers, kumuda flowers, padma flowers, and pundarika flowers. Immeasurable renowned flowers such as these adorned the pools.
Whoever beheld the golden flower and the jeweled pools attained the “pure Dharma eye”; how much more so one who entered them to bathe. Whoever entered them to bathe attained the “pure, unborn patience regarding Dharmas.” Beneath the golden flower stood a precious lion throne one hundred yojanas high.
The Tathagata sat upon the jeweled throne. From every pore of his body, from every part above and below, he emitted great radiant light. The golden radiance was of the same hue as the flowers, and golden rays streamed forth in the four directions, illuminating all Buddha lands throughout the ten directions.
Wherever the Buddha’s floral radiance shone, the mountains, valleys, lands, heights, and lowlands became level and entirely golden in color. No impurity remained; the hells dissolved into emptiness, and hungry ghosts attained liberation, except for the icchantikas and those who slandered the Vaipulya sutras. Through the Buddha’s spiritual power, this land and other lands all became alike, without any difference.
When the Buddhas of the ten directions saw this radiance, they all praised Buddha Shakyamuni, saying: “Excellent! Excellent! Greatly Compassionate World-Honored One!
The radiance now emitted differs from the customary radiance. Formerly, when light was emitted, it first shone toward the east; today, light is emitted simultaneously in all four directions, illuminating everywhere throughout the ten directions. Know that the purpose of this radiance is to deliver all suffering beings, enabling them to leave the three realms and reach great nirvana.”
At that time, the Buddhas of the ten directions, with different mouths but a single voice, addressed their attendants and the assembly of great bodhisattvas: “Good men! You should know that today, in the Saha world, Buddha Shakyamuni Tathagata is emitting great radiant light and is about to expound the wondrous Dharma to deliver suffering beings. You should journey to that land, make offerings to the Buddha, listen to the sutra and Dharma, and ask about whatever doubts you may have.
The beings of that land have always been obstinate and wicked, deceitful and untruthful, and they do not believe in the One Vehicle. Buddha Shakyamuni’s compassionate heart is vast, and his countless skillful means are excellent. He expounds the Three Vehicles to deliver beings from the three realms.
Although he teaches the Three Vehicles, his higher words are good, his middle words are good, and his lower words are also good; their meanings are profound, pure, and complete. It is impossible to encounter that Buddha, the World-Honored One, even in hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas. The sutras and Dharma that he expounds are exceedingly difficult to hear.
It is not easy for that great assembly to encounter such an occasion, nor can the wondrous golden flower appearing at the place where Shakyamuni was born be seen. Therefore, you should go to that realm, meet the Buddha, and ask about your doubts, thereby benefiting yourselves and benefiting sentient beings.” After these words were spoken, from each of the Buddha lands throughout the ten directions, one billion bodhisattvas rose from their seats, bowed to the Buddhas, and journeyed together.
Each bodhisattva brought hundreds of thousands of musical instruments and caused wondrous jeweled flowers to rain down. They went to the place of the Buddha, and upon arriving, circumambulated him seven times, bowed at his feet, withdrew, and sat to one side. Together, with different mouths but a single voice, they addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One!
Today we wish to ask about one matter. We humbly beseech the World-Honored One to explain it for us, for the benefit of sentient beings!”
The Buddha then addressed the bodhisattva-mahasattvas: “Good men! If you have any doubts, ask them now. I shall explain them clearly and decisively for you!”
The bodhisattvas then addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One! The Buddha of our land teaches only the One Vehicle. Why does the Tathagata teach the Three Vehicles?”
At that time, the World-Honored One, employing unobstructed wisdom, addressed the bodhisattvas: “Today, for the benefit of sentient beings, you have asked me about this meaning. Listen carefully! Listen carefully!
Good men! It is like a single person who has three names. While still a child, he is called a youth; at the age of twenty, he is called a middle-aged man; and after the age of eighty, he is called an old man.
My teaching of the Three Vehicles is likewise. For those of immature and narrow minds, who are shravakas, I teach the Lesser Vehicle. For those of middling capacity, who are pratyekabuddhas, I teach the Middle Vehicle.
For great bodhisattvas, whose minds aspire to the great path, I teach the Great Vehicle. Good men! Listen: the principle does not have two extremes, and all return to the same path.
Although the explanations and disciplines differ, they ultimately form a single consistent teaching. In principle, there is the One Vehicle, which is divided into three. Shravakas and pratyekabuddhas all enter the Great Vehicle, and that Great Vehicle is precisely the Buddha Vehicle.
Therefore, the Three Vehicles are the One Vehicle.”
When this Dharma was expounded, among all those in the assembly, ten thousand bodhisattvas attained patience with the non-arising of dharmas; eight hundred bhikshus attained the fruit of arhatship; twenty thousand humans and devas attained the pure Dharma eye; and eight million people aroused the bodhi mind.
At that time, the bodhisattvas who had come from the ten directions joined their palms and addressed the Buddha: “Today, through the power of those Buddhas, we have come to this realm, beheld the World-Honored One, and heard the Great Vehicle. We ask that you permit us to receive and uphold this sutra. After the Buddha’s nirvana, in this land and in other lands, beneath trees, in mountains and forests, in the dwelling places of immortals, in cities, towns, and villages, in open fields and burial grounds, in monasteries, stupas, Sangha dwellings, great assemblies where the Dharma is taught, and the residences of laypeople, we shall propagate this sutra and spread it widely everywhere, ensuring that it never ceases.
Why is this? As long as this sutra remains, the evil paths will be cut off for a long time. This is because we once heard the Buddha say that the hells cannot obstruct one who recites even a single sentence of it.
The devas rejoice and constantly draw near to such a person, who naturally cultivates goodness. If anyone hears this Vaipulya Sutra, rejoices in it, reveres and believes it, copies, reads, recites, bows to, receives, and upholds it, or invokes a single Buddha’s name or the name of a single bodhisattva contained in the sutra, that person will be peaceful, joyful, healthy, and free from calamities and misfortunes in the present life.
After that person’s life ends, we bodhisattvas will come before them and lead them back to our lands, where we shall be born together in the same place. Why is this? It is because that person receives and upholds this sutra.
To receive and uphold this sutra is to uphold the Buddha’s body. One who upholds the Buddha’s body is a bodhisattva and is therefore our fellow student. For this reason, those who receive and uphold this sutra vow to be born together in one place and never be separated from one another.”
At that time, the kings of ghosts and spirits, the Great Brahma Heavenly King, the devas of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, the Four Heavenly Kings who protect the world, Vajrapani the Secret-Traces, the kings of ghosts and spirits, General Pancika, Nala the Dragon King, Nanda the Dragon King, Upananda the Dragon King, the asura kings, the garuda kings, the Great Eloquence Heavenly King, the Heavenly King Mother of Demon Children, the ghosts and spirits of all mountains, the spirit kings, the kings of tree spirits, the kings of river spirits, the kings of sea spirits, the kings of earth spirits, the kings of water spirits, the kings of fire spirits, and the kings of wind spirits—immeasurable and boundless spirit kings such as these, together with all the devas—rose from their seats,
bowed their heads and faces at the Buddha’s feet, joined their palms reverently, and addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One!
From this day onward, we shall constantly protect and uphold this Vaipulya Sutra spoken by the World-Honored One. Wherever this sutra is present, we spirit kings will always remain before it to purify that place. Whether it is within a stupa, in a dwelling, in the home of a layperson, or in an open place, if anyone touches or grasps this sutra with unclean hands, or reads and recites it without reverence, we shall cause that person, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, to find no peace in body or mind.
Everywhere that person will be afraid, become entangled in evil affairs, suffer retribution in the present body, and, when life ends, enter hell. If a person is reverent, pure in body and mind, holds this sutra aloft, bathes, burns incense, receives, upholds, reads, and recites it, or copies it, remembers it without forgetting, keeps this scripture in mind, and commits no evil deeds—if a person can act in this way, we spirit kings, for the sake of this scripture, will protect that person.
If that person lies down, we shall stand before them, preventing them from seeing evil and preventing evil people and evil spirits from harming them. If that person remains at home, we shall guard the house. If that person wishes to travel, we spirit kings shall go before them to guide the way, providing whatever is needed.
Wherever that person travels throughout the four directions, we shall allow no obstruction. They will always encounter auspicious circumstances, and when their life ends, they will be born in heaven. In future lives, they will encounter the Buddha and never lose the Great Vehicle.”
At that time, the Blessed One said to the bodhisattvas and the spirit kings: “So it is! So it is! It is exactly as you have said.
A scripture such as this cannot even be heard, much less seen. If one wishes to receive and uphold, read, and recite this scripture, one must bathe and cleanse oneself, put on fresh, clean robes, sweep the dwelling clean, hang silk banners and canopies, adorn the interior, and burn various kinds of fragrant incense, such as sandalwood incense, powdered incense, and anointing incense. One must make reverence during the six periods of the day, beginning with one day and continuing for as many as seven days.
During that time, one must read and recite this scripture with an upright mind, upright intention, right mindfulness, right contemplation, right reflection, right deliberation, right reception and upholding, right practice, and right instruction and transformation. During the six periods of day and night, one must pay homage to the Buddhas and bodhisattvas and the twelve divisions of scripture named in this sutra. If one can thus pay homage, read, and recite with faith, reverence, and single-mindedness, all the grave offenses described in this scripture will without doubt be completely eradicated.
Why is this? The Great Vaipulya Scripture is that according to which the Buddhas of the ten directions cultivate and practice and which they protect and uphold. It is the mother of all Buddhas, the king of all scriptures, a treasury of wondrous meanings, the path of the bodhisattvas, and a profound and wondrous Vaipulya scripture of the Mahayana.
“It is also like the world, which possesses six great elements that are inconceivable. What are the six? The first is the great earth; the second, great water; the third, great fire; the fourth, great wind; the fifth, the great sun; and the sixth, great space.
The scripture is like the great earth, bearing all things, whether pure or impure, good or bad. The scripture is like great water, washing away all defilement, evil, impurity, stains, and filth. The scripture is like great fire, burning away all afflictions, defilement, evil, and impure things.
The scripture is like great wind, blowing away all dust, grime, and impurity. The scripture is like the great sun, universally illuminating every dark place. The scripture is like great space, embracing the entire universe and all worlds, whether fair or foul, good or bad.
This Vaipulya Scripture is a Mahayana scripture, vast and unequaled, beyond all comparison. Above, it embraces bodhisattvas; in the middle, shravakas; and below, all sentient beings with form. Therefore, you must receive and uphold this scripture, propagate this scripture, and have faith and reverence for this scripture.
It will always enable you and the bodhisattvas to enter the wisdom of the Buddha and clearly perceive Buddha-nature. It will enable you devas and spirit kings, as well as those who receive and uphold, read, and recite this scripture, always to see me and to see all future Buddhas turning the great Dharma wheel and seated at the bodhimanda.”
At that time, within the great assembly, a bodhisattva named Sign of Faith rose from his seat, arranged his robes, bowed at the Buddha’s feet, and addressed the Buddha, saying: “O Blessed One! Today we wish to ask about one matter. We humbly beseech the Blessed One to compassionately instruct us. The words spoken by the Blessed One can benefit immeasurable sentient beings!”
The Buddha then said: “Bodhisattva Sign of Faith, excellent! Excellent! Good man, if there is anything you wish to ask, ask it freely. I shall distinguish and explain it for you. That which you ask of me will bring great benefit to immeasurable sentient beings!”
Bodhisattva Sign of Faith then addressed the Buddha, saying: “O Blessed One! I recall that long ago, in the distant past, immeasurable ages ago, there was a Buddha, a Blessed One, named Treasure-Victory. Those who heard that Buddha’s name even once were all reborn in the heavens.
Not long afterward, in the kingdom of King Heavenly Sovereign Light, there was a great pond in a broad field. Its water had dried up, and within the pond were ten thousand large fish. Exposed beneath the sun, their bodies burned with heat, and they were about to pass through the gate of death.
There was a great being named Flowing Water who, upon seeing those fish, gave rise to compassion. He provided them with water and food, allowing them to live for a few more days. Knowing that the fish would not live long and would inevitably die, he invoked for their sake the name of the Buddha Treasure-Victory only three times.
As soon as the fish had heard it, they all died and were reborn in the celestial palace of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. Because of this cause and condition, I now beseech the Blessed One, for the sake of this great assembly and sentient beings in future ages, to proclaim the names of the Buddhas, so that those who hear the name of the Blessed One Shakyamuni may likewise obtain immeasurable and boundless benefit and boundless merit, always enjoy wealth and happiness, and come to see the Buddha.
Since this is a matter of causes and conditions, I pray that you will proclaim them and deliver from grave offenses those sentient beings who, through delusion, have violated the precepts and prohibitions.”
The Buddha then said to Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sign of Faith: “Good man, if I were to expound at length the names possessed by the Buddhas of the ten directions, I could not finish speaking them in hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas. The number of drops in all bodies of water might be known, but the names of the Buddhas could never all be known. The weight of all Mount Sumerus might be known, but the names of the Buddhas could never all be known. The dimensions of the entire great earth might be known, but the names of the Buddhas could never all be known. The boundaries of all space and worlds might be completely known, but the names of the Buddhas could never all be known.
“I shall now briefly proclaim for you the names of the Buddhas of the three times. If anyone hears them pass through his ears even once, then at the end of his life he will be reborn in the heavens. If, after hearing them, he has faith and reverence and can also copy them, invoke their names, and pay homage, immeasurable grave offenses accumulated throughout birth and death will be eradicated, and he will gain immeasurable merit. At the end of his life, that person may be reborn according to his wish in any of the worlds of the ten directions. He will also see me and the Buddhas of the future Bhadrakalpa.”
At that time, the Blessed One told the great assembly: “You should arrange your robes, set your minds, bodies, intentions, mindfulness, and contemplation aright. If you wish to hear the Dharma, you should single-mindedly pay reverence to the Buddha Sumeru-Lamp King; pay reverence to the Buddha Treasure King; pay reverence to the Buddha Treasure-Victory; pay reverence to the Buddha Amitabha; pay reverence to the Buddha Vipashyin; pay reverence to the Buddha Prabhutaratna; pay reverence to the Buddha Shakyamuni; pay reverence to the One Who Embraces and Upholds All Dharmas; pay reverence to the One Beyond Measure; pay reverence to the Incomparable One; pay reverence to the One of Boundless Dharmas; pay reverence to the Inconceivable One;
pay reverence to the One Who Abides in Power, the Power within Powers; pay reverence to the One Possessing the Ten Powers and Fearlessness; pay reverence to the Honored One of the Three Realms; pay reverence to the Great Guide of All; pay reverence to the One Able to Sever Every Bond and Fetter; pay reverence to the One Who Has Reached the Other Shore; pay reverence to the One Who Has Delivered All Worlds; pay reverence to the One Forever Free from the Path of Birth and Death; pay reverence to the One Liberated through Samadhi; pay reverence to the One Who, Like Space, Has No Support; pay reverence to the Great Dharma King amid the Assembly; pay reverence to the One Who Has Destroyed the Hosts of the Four Maras; and pay reverence to the Great Compassionate Father of His Only Child.
Humbly pray to encounter the Buddhas in life after life, clearly perceive Buddha-nature, and reach great nirvana. Why is this? Because all sentient beings with form possess Buddha-nature.
Great assembly, join your ten fingers together, listen earnestly and attentively, and make offerings with a single mind.
Hear me proclaim the three times,
The names of the Buddhas of the ten directions.
Even those guilty of the five uninterrupted offenses
Should give rise to the perception of liberation.
If people lack roots of goodness,
I shall still proclaim them for their sake;
They themselves will be unable to understand,
And the scorched sprouts will fall away of themselves.
Only the true and real will remain,
While the characteristics of the Lesser Vehicle are cast aside.
Only the Mahayana will remain;
Those Two Vehicles will be cast aside,
And only the One Vehicle will remain.
Those who lack roots of goodness
Will not be able to hear these sounds.
Having made offerings to immeasurable Buddhas,
They can now hear the Buddhas’ names;
Know that they should receive and uphold them.
Those who have attained a measure of liberation
Abide securely upon the pure ground.
Now, within my Dharma,
They practice walking meditation and perform the Buddha’s work,
Receiving, upholding, reading, and reciting,
And paying homage to the Buddhas’ names.
They abandon every act of Mara
And eradicate violations of the four grave prohibitions.
Those guilty of the uninterrupted offenses and icchantikas—
In future ages, those people
Will attain the Buddha path.
If people do not give rise to faith,
They will certainly fall into the three evil paths.
Those who give rise to faith and diligently pay homage
Will behold immeasurable Buddhas.
They should pay homage with a single mind,
Vowing to eradicate immeasurable offenses;
Therefore, they now have reverent faith.
All of you in the great assembly, join your palms and listen carefully. Gather and restrain body and mind, allowing neither to stir or waver. Prostrate yourselves with all five limbs upon the ground and single-mindedly listen and receive.
At that time, the Blessed One proclaimed the names, saying:

Homage to one hundred million, one billion, ten billion, one hundred billion, one trillion, nayutas, sands of the Ganges, immeasurable asamkhyeyas of Buddhas.
If anyone hears the names of the innumerable asamkhyeyas of Buddhas of the past, that person will not fall into the sufferings of the hells for eight hundred thousand kalpas. Therefore, we now reverently pay homage.
Those who, because they bow in homage
To the Buddhas of the past,
Eradicate offenses and recover their original mind,
And no longer commit the ten unwholesome deeds
Or the five rebellious offenses,
Will always hear the true Dharma
And fully attain the Mahayana path;
Therefore, we now reverently pay homage.
Only two kinds of persons are excluded:
First, those who slander the Vaipulya sutras;
Second, those who are icchantikas.
If a person’s mind is pure
And that person is not an icchantika,
They will always behold innumerable Buddhas;
Therefore, we now reverently pay homage.
If one has committed grave offenses
And the five offenses of immediate retribution,
Yet one’s faith is pure,
One may still abide in accordance with the Dharma.
All this is due to reverently paying homage,
Which eradicates the karma of the ten unwholesome deeds;
One will certainly obtain the Mahayana precepts.
Therefore, one should reverently pay homage.
When the Buddha spoke the names of the Buddhas of the past, ten thousand bodhisattvas attained the patience of the non-arising of dharmas; eight hundred shravakas brought forth a measure of the aspiration; five thousand bhikshus attained arhatship; and one hundred million devas and humans attained the pure Dharma eye.

And behold the Buddhas of the ten directions;
May we always be born in pure lands,
Hear the truth of the ultimate meaning,
And clearly know that the Tathagata is eternal.

Therefore, today we reverently pay homage.
Through paying homage,

And the ten evil karmas already committed,
Are now eradicated;
In the future, one will behold Buddha-nature.
Therefore, have steadfast faith,
Copy, read, and recite this sutra.
Life after life, wherever one is born,
One will not give rise to evil or erroneous views,
But will always attain right liberation;
One will not be born in a borderland,
Nor be born in an evil country,
Nor behold an evil king.
For four billion kalpas,
One will not fall into the sufferings of hell.
Therefore, today we reverently pay homage,
Eradicate the ten evil karmas,
And attain the great dharani.
When the Buddha proclaimed the names of the Buddhas of the future age, five hundred bodhisattvas attained the stage of non-retrogression, seven hundred bhikshunis attained the path of arhatship, and 6.2 billion devas and humans attained the purified Dharma-eye.
Homage to the great dharani of complete retention, the twelve divisions of the canon: sutra, geya, vyakarana, gatha, udana, nidana, avadana, itivrittaka, jataka, vaipulya, adbhuta-dharma, and upadesha, and to all the paramitas contained within the great treasury of scriptures. If anyone hears the twelve divisions of the canon and all the paramitas, reads and recites them, pays homage to them, faithfully delights in them, and receives and upholds them, that person will not fall into the sufferings of hell for two hundred thousand kalpas and will attain the knowledge of past lives. Therefore, today we reverently pay homage.
When the names of the twelve divisions of the scriptures were proclaimed, eighty-five thousand bodhisattvas attained the Vajra Samadhi; one billion shravakas aroused the Mahayana mind; ten thousand bhikshus and bhikshunis attained the state of arhat; and immeasurable devas and humans attained the purity of the Dharma eye.

If anyone hears the names of these Great Beings, these great bodhisattva-mahasattvas, that person shall not fall into the sufferings of the hells for forty thousand kalpas, shall not belong to the prison of the three realms, and shall always belong to the King of Liberation.
They shall not be born in a borderland,
They shall not be born in an evil country,
They shall not receive an evil body,
They shall not give rise to wrong views,
They shall not be born into a lowly family,
They shall not be born among adherents of non-Buddhist paths,
Their faculties shall be complete,
They shall always hear the true Dharma,
They shall not undergo prohibitive restraints,
They shall always be fully endowed with
The dignified conduct of the Mahayana,
They shall always behold Buddha-nature;
Therefore, I now reverently bow,
Abide securely within the Buddhadharma,
And in a future life attain the Buddha Way.
When the names of the great bodhisattvas had been proclaimed, eighty-eight hundred million pure good men and faithful women realized the fruit of anagamin; ninety-four hundred million devas attained the fruit of sakridagamin; seventy-eight billion bhiksus who had lost their minds regained their original minds and realized the fruit of arhatship; and one billion bodhisattvas attained the great dharani and, in future lives, shall attain the Buddha Way.
