The Rāja Scripture: On Excessive Reminding to Request Robe-Cloth
Background
The Rāja scripture belongs to the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Pāli Canon and is found in the Pātimokkha Nuns' rules. These disciplinary texts were compiled to protect the purity of the monastic order, especially discipline in the management of property and the devotion offered from outside the Buddhist community.
The background of this scripture comes from incidents in the community of bhikkhunīs that the Buddha witnessed. Some nuns abused their position by repeatedly reminding or pressing friends, acquaintances, or Buddhist laypeople to obtain cloth and money for robe-cloth (cīvara). This conduct not only violated the spirit of austerity and freedom from greed in the Buddha-Dharma, but also harmed the respect and trust of the community toward the monastic order.
Main Content
The Rāja scripture states that a bhikkhunī is not permitted to remind someone repeatedly or excessively in order to obtain robe-cloth, whether that person is a friend, relative, or someone capable of providing it. The act of "excessive reminding" (atilopana) is regarded as a breach of the training rule (Saṅghādisesa, an offense that must be confessed before the Sangha).
This rule clearly distinguishes between receiving cloth in the normal way through the donors' free choice and actively exerting pressure or abusing relationships to achieve a material aim. Even reminding a second or third time may be regarded as crossing the permitted boundary.
The scripture emphasizes that the Buddha-Dharma encourages renunciation and self-restraint, especially for those who have gone forth. A bhikkhunī should cultivate contentment (santuṭṭhi) and seek to live simply. If a new robe is needed, she should wait until others offer it of their own accord, or ask once politely without continuing to apply pressure.
Practical Meaning
The Rāja scripture teaches us a profound lesson on restraining greed and respecting the freedom of others.
🌏 The Buddhist canon is vast — some sūtras (such as comparative Vinaya across schools, or untranslated Tibetan-canon texts) have to this day NEVER been translated into Vietnamese or English by anyone, scholars included. Rather than leave it blank, Inti AI offers a FAITHFUL summary grounded in the tradition — from the sūtra's title, origin and essence — so you can still reach this rare part of the treasury. Whenever an original translation exists, the app shows the original first.
