26. "A rule to be trained in: One must not dig around the bowl while eating."
Digging around the bowl while eating: digging on all four sides, leaving the center untouched.
One should first receive rice into one side of the bowl, then receive soup, and then mix them together and eat. If milk or fat has been mixed into the rice, one must not dig out the choice portions to eat first out of fondness for good flavor, but must eat in proper order. If one wishes to give some to another, one should scoop out half and give it. If one is unrestrained in the sense faculties and digs around the bowl while eating, this is to show disregard for the rule to be trained in. Except in the case of mental disturbance or derangement, there is an offense. Therefore it is said:
"A rule to be trained in: One must not dig around the bowl while eating."
When the Buddha was dwelling in the city of Sāvatthī, as described in full above. At that time, a householder came to the monastery to offer a meal to the community of monks. While eating, the group of six bhikkhus moved food from one side of their mouths to the other while chewing, and were mocked by people of the world:
—Why do Śākyan monastics behave like dissolute persons, like camels, cattle, or goats, regurgitating food from their stomachs to chew again? These are degenerate men — what spiritual conduct do they have?
The bhikkhus then brought the matter and reported it to the Blessed One. The Buddha immediately had the group of six bhikkhus summoned. When they arrived, the Buddha asked:
—Did this thing truly happen?
—It truly did, Blessed One.
—From this day forward, you must not move food from one side of the mouth to the other while eating.
Thereupon, the Buddha instructed all the bhikkhus dwelling in the city of Sāvatthī to assemble, and for the sake of ten benefits he laid down a rule for the bhikkhus — one which, even if already heard, must be heard again:
