– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA

– THE PRECEPTS OF THE BHIKKHUNĪS

– EXPOSITION OF THE FIRST SECTION OF THE 141 PĀCITTIYAS

80. PRECEPT: EATING GARLIC.

When the Buddha was residing in the city of Sāvatthī, at that time a merchant who specialized in growing garlic invited the bhikkhunī Saṅgha to receive an offering of garlic. Thereupon, the group of six bhikkhunīs went to the garden and ate garlic, trampling about carelessly. When the merchant came to visit the garden and saw that the garlic had been damaged, he asked the gardener:

—Why has the garlic been trampled like this?

—Previously, the bhikkhunīs were invited to come and receive an offering of garlic, so they entered the garden to take and eat it or carry it away, and trampled it in this manner.

Upon hearing this, the merchant reproached them: "I invited them to come and receive an offering of garlic; they should have simply eaten it there. Why did they carry it away and trample it like this?"

The bhikkhunīs heard this and reported it to Mahāpajāpatī. Mahāpajāpatī then went and reported the matter in full to the Blessed One. When the bhikkhunī replied: "It is indeed so," the Buddha rebuked them:—That is a wrongful act. From now on, I do not permit the eating of garlic. (And so on) Even those who have already heard this must hear it again:

—If a bhikkhunī eats garlic, she commits a Pācittiya offense.

EXPLANATION:

Garlic: This includes cultivated garlic and wild garlic found in the mountains; in general, all such varieties of garlic are not permitted to be eaten. Whether cooked or raw, neither is permitted to be eaten. Prepared by stewing or burned to ash, neither is permitted to be eaten. However, if the body has sores, one is permitted to apply garlic as a salve. And when applying it, one must stay in a secluded place until the sores are healed, and must bathe thoroughly before returning among the community. Therefore, the Blessed One spoke as above.

Summary verse:
