– EXPLAINING THE FIRST SECTION OF THE 141 PĀCITTIYAS
121. PRECEPT: SITTING WITH A MALE IN A CONCEALED PLACE.
When the Buddha was dwelling at Vesālī, at that time the bhikkhunī Bhaddrā went to the home of her relatives and sat with brothers, sisters, and children in a concealed place. Another bhikkhunī saw this and rebuked her, saying: "Why does one who has gone forth sit together with laypeople in a private place, just like a worldly person?" She then reported the matter to Mahāpajāpatī. In the end, the Buddha instructed: "From this day forward, I do not permit sitting with a male in a concealed place — and even those who have already heard this must hear it again:
—If a bhikkhunī sits with a male in a concealed place, she commits a Pācittiya offense.
EXPLANATION:
Pācittiya: As has already been explained above in the precepts of the bhikkhus.
Therefore the Blessed One spoke (as above).
