– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA
– PRECEPTS FOR BHIKKHUNĪS
– CONCERNING THE BEGINNING SECTION OF THE MISCELLANEOUS RULES
ONE MUST NOT INSTRUCT GARDEN WOMEN TO SELL THEIR BODIES.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, the Blessed One had at that time instituted a rule forbidding the keeping of prostitutes. Nevertheless, a bhikkhunī secretly kept women as garden workers and then allowed them to sell their bodies to support themselves. On account of this, people of the world criticized her, saying: "This is not the conduct of one who has gone forth from home life—these are prostitutes."
The bhikkhunī then brought the matter and reported it to the Blessed One. In the end, when the Buddha inquired of her, she replied:
—It is indeed so, Blessed One!
—From this day forward, I do not permit the secret keeping of women as garden workers and then instructing them to sell their bodies in order to support themselves. Whoever does so commits an offense of Vinayātikrama. This is what is called "garden women."
