– ON THE FIRST SECTION OF MISCELLANEOUS RULES
ONE MUST NOT KEEP A PROSTITUTE.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Sāvatthī, at that time, women of the Śākya clan, the Malla clan, and the Licchavi clan — daughters of noble families — had gone forth into homelessness bringing along comely attendants, and then instructed those attendants to sell their bodies to outsiders in order to support their own livelihood. Because of this, people of the world mocked them, saying: "These are not renunciants — they are prostitutes."
The bhikkhunīs then brought this matter and reported it to the Blessed One. In the end, when the Buddha questioned her, she replied:
—It is indeed so, Blessed One!
—Why do you keep a prostitute to support your livelihood? From this day forward, I do not permit keeping a prostitute to support one's livelihood. Whoever does so commits an offense of Vinaya transgression. This is what is called keeping a prostitute.
