– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA
– THE PRECEPTS OF THE BHIKKHUNĪS
– ON THE FIRST SECTION OF THE MISCELLANEOUS RULES
THE MANNER OF COVERING AND UNCOVERING THE BOWL.
When the Buddha was residing in the city of Śrāvastī, at that time the bhikkhunī Sthūlanandā went to beg alms at a wealthy household, where a woman who had suffered a miscarriage said to her:
—Please take this away and dispose of it for me.
—I cannot do that.
—I will give you such-and-such things in return.
And so she placed the fetus inside her bowl and departed. At that time, Mahā-Kāśyapa, while going on his alms round, was habitually reflecting: "When I receive food first, I will offer it to a bhikkhu or a bhikkhunī." Therefore, upon seeing that bhikkhunī, he said: "Bring your bowl here." But she kept it tightly covered and would not let him see. The Venerable called again, but still she would not let him see.
Mahā-Kāśyapa, being a person of great dignity and authority, called out in a loud voice. Frightened, she opened the lid of her bowl for him to see. Upon seeing what was inside, the Venerable rebuked her: "Oh!
How could you do such an evil thing?" He then spoke to the bhikkhunīs about the matter. The bhikkhunīs brought the affair and reported it to the Blessed One. Finally, when the Buddha questioned her, she replied:
—It is true, Blessed One!
—This is an evil deed and unlawful. Why did you cover your bowl so that it could not be seen? From this day forward I do not permit covering the bowl so that it cannot be seen, nor is it permitted to carry the bowl uncovered and empty. When the bowl is full from alms-begging, it may be covered, but if a bhikkhu is seen, the cover must be lifted and the contents shown. If anyone carries the bowl uncovered and empty, they commit an offense of transgressing the Vinaya; and likewise, when a bhikkhu is seen and the bowl is not uncovered for him to see, that too is an offense of transgressing the Vinaya. This is called the matter pertaining to the bowl.
