– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA
– PRECEPTS FOR BHIKKHUNĪS
– ON THE FIRST SECTION OF MISCELLANEOUS RULES
BHIKKHUNĪS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO WEAR KAUŚEYA ROBES.
When the Buddha was residing at Vaiśālī, the bhikkhunī Bhadra wore a kauśeya robe when visiting her relatives. On the way, she was caught in a heavy downpour, and her body became thoroughly drenched; looking at her, one could see her entire body through the robe as clearly as a figure of crystal. The people, curious, gathered around to look, and so her attendant disciple had to stand to one side to screen her. The bhikkhunīs then brought the matter and reported it to the Blessed One. In the end, when the Buddha questioned her, she replied:
—It is indeed as said, Blessed One!
—From this day forward, bhikkhunīs are not permitted to wear kauśeya robes. Kauśeya robes are of two kinds: the first is raw silk, and the second is woven silk. The raw kind has thin, delicate threads, while the woven kind has threads that are twisted together. If anyone wears a kauśeya robe of thin silk, she incurs an offense of violation of the Vinaya. If she wears the kind woven of thick silk, she incurs an offense of violation of the Vinaya with remorse of mind. However, bhikkhus who wear such robes incur no offense. This is what is called a kauśeya robe.
