– MAHĀSĀṂGHIKA VINAYA
– RULES OF DISCIPLINE FOR BHIKKHUNĪS
– ON THE BEGINNING SECTION OF MISCELLANEOUS RULES
ONE MUST NOT STRIKE THE VAGINA WITH THE HAND.
When the Buddha was residing at the city of Śrāvastī, at that time the dwelling of the bhikkhunīs was separated from the dwelling of laypeople by only a single wall. Because lustful thoughts arose, a bhikkhunī struck her own vagina with her hand. At that moment the husband heard the sound and asked his wife:
—What is that sound?
—I do not understand why such a sound has arisen.
—This renunciant is one who cultivates the holy life; lustful thoughts arose and she could not restrain herself, so she struck her vagina and produced such a sound.
The bhikkhunīs then brought the matter and reported it to the Blessed One. In the end, the Buddha asked:
—Did you truly do this?
—It is truly so, Blessed One!
—From this day forward, I do not permit striking the vagina. Striking means striking with the hand. If anyone uses a bowl or a dish to strike it in order to calm lustful thoughts, that is an offense of duṣkṛta. This is called striking the vagina with the hand.
